Y2 Series current transformer

A current transformer (CT) is a key piece of electrical equipment used to monitor, manage, and safeguard power systems. It transforms large alternating currents (AC) into smaller, measurable quantities. It is widely used to link high-current power circuits to protective relays or sensitive measurement equipment in power generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial settings.

    Product Overview

A CT is driven by electromagnetic induction and has two windings: a secondary winding (many turns linked to safety or measurement devices) and a primary winding (few turns connected in series with the high-current circuit). The secondary winding, which is normally defined at 5A or 1A for most industrial applications, receives a low current, whereas the primary winding receives a high current. This proportionality, also known as the transformation ratio, provides accurate current measurement while shielding workers and equipment from potentially hazardous voltages.

CTs require high precision (for energy metering), good linearity (to decrease measurement error), and insulation strength (to maintain high voltage between windings). The secondary winding should never be open-circuited while using a CT. This is because an open circuit may generate extraordinarily high voltages that can harm electrical devices. To summarize, current transformers are critical for ensuring the dependability, efficacy, and safety of modern electrical systems because they allow more accurate current monitoring and enhanced fault protection.
