Product Overview
A CT is powered by electromagnetic induction and has two windings: a secondary winding (many turns connected to safety or measurement devices) and a main winding (a few turns connected in series with the high-current circuit). The secondary winding, which is typically tuned to 5A or 1A for most industrial applications, receives a low current, while the primary winding receives a high current. This proportionality, also known as the transformation ratio, enables precise current monitoring while protecting personnel and equipment from potentially harmful voltages.
CTs need high precision for energy metering, enough linearity to reduce measurement error, and enough insulation to sustain high voltage between windings. The secondary winding should never be open circuit while utilizing a CT.
