    A CT uses electromagnetic induction and is made up of two windings: a secondary winding with several turns connected to safety or measurement devices, and a primary winding with a few turns connected in series to a high-current circuit. The primary winding receives a lot of current, whereas the secondary winding, which is typically tuned to 5A or 1A for the majority of industrial applications, receives very little.
